Teaching Philosophy
I love learning and want to become a great teacher. I have had many opportunities that have offered invaluable training and insight into the importance of teaching and education as a whole. I have worked with ESL (English as a Second Language) students at East High School. This class has allowed me the chance to work with many students with different backgrounds than my own. Many are refugees from Somalia, and some as Immigrants from Mexico and China. In this class I have helped edit college application essays, lead group discussions, and planned lessons and taught the class. I also have spent the past year teaching English to students in rural Japan. I taught classes in both Middle School and Elementary levels, helped improve school curriculum, provided workshops for Japanese Teachers of English, and helped out with community projects such as School festivals and town events. These experiences have given me the chance to teach and work with a variety of people of different age groups and cultural backgrounds. This will be useful for me because, as a teacher, I will be expected to teach and provide the pedagogy and curriculum that is relevant and understandable to all the learners in my classroom.
I have found that I learned the most in my classes where the teachers were dedicated and made their subject matter fun to learn and made it relate to me. I want to become like those teachers and be able to influence my students’ lives in a positive way.. I’m sure my students will be as varied as my work and life experience and that every student will have different strengths and abilities. With each of these individuals I hope to create an environment where learning and communicating effectively in an organized manner will be interesting and fun. I want my students to enjoy their class time and be able to understand the subject matter so that it will be of value during their educational experience. I hope that as I am able to teach them, I will be able to learn from them as well.
As classrooms become more diverse, it is important for all students to be able relate to and comprehend the information that is given to them. In multicultural education this becomes difficult because each student will have different perspectives and backgrounds that a teacher must cater to. As a teacher, I will gain the chance to build strong relationships with a variety of people in school and in the community and hope that I can influence these people in a proactive way. Whether it is in work or in my daily life, I want to be able to work with my peers and students to gain and promote clearer understanding about other cultures as well as about my own.
